Obituary

Rev. Alfred A. Ambrose, son of the late James and Angeline Ambrose, was born on September 14, 1942 at Altoona, PA.  He was ordained into the ministry of the Lutheran Church in America on June 25, 1967.  Alfred graduated from Susquehanna University, Selinsgrove, PA cum laude with a bachelor of arts degree in May, 1964, and master of divinity degree from the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg, PA in June, 1967.

He served as assistant pastor of First Lutheran Church, Altoona, PA, 1967-1968; as associate pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, Milton, PA, 1968-1973; as pastor/administrator of Tressler-Lutheran Services, Mechanicsburg, PA, 1973-1984.

He was pastor/vice president of the Lutheran Social Services of New England, Worcester, MA, 1984-1996, and as pastor/administrator of Lutheran Fellowship Square Foundation, Reston, VA from 1996 until he retired in 2002.   In retirement he served as interim pastor of Union Lutheran Church, York, PA, 2002- 2003, and as interim pastor of the Hellam parish, York, PA, 2003-2008.

Pastor Ambrose served on the New England Synod's Task Force on Aging and on the Metropolitan Washington D.C. Synod's Division of Church in Society.  He was active in the Lutheran Deaf Ministry in Altoona, PA and Milton, PA and was co-founder of the Milton- Lewisburg, PA Meals-on-Wheels.

On September 21, 1968 at Altoona, PA, Pastor Ambrose married Janice Marie Hescox.  On September 21, 2018 they celebrated the 50 th anniversary of their marriage.  Their union was blessed with two children, Bradley Scott, born October 7, 1969 and Gwendolyn Leigh, born July 29, 1972.   He was a member of St. Philip Lutheran Church, Mt. Dora, FL. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your local food banks in his name.
