Obituary

Allen Albert Lyle, 90 years of age, husband of the late Virginia Gmeinweiser Lyle, of Mount Dora, FL passed on Friday, May 7, 2021 due to multiple health issues  He was born on July 17, 1930 in Elmira, NY and was the only child of the late Albert Lyle and Permilla Lyle.

After moving to Rochester, NY in 1946, he graduated from high school in 1948 and joined the US Army in March of 1949.  During his service in the Army, he was stationed in Japan and eventually in Korea to serve in the Korean War.  In the war he was wounded, awarded a Purple Heart and received an honorable discharge in June 1952.  He returned to Rochester and met Virginia Gmeinweiser, whom he married in August 1954.  They had four children who they raised in Webster, New York.

Allen was an excellent father and husband and will be dearly missed by all that have known him.

He is survived by his children Allen Lyle Jr. and his wife Darcy Lyle, Lynette Lyle Howard and her husband Donald Howard, Lauren Lyle Schraeder and her husband Gary Schraeder. Allen was predeceased by his son Lawrence Lyle.  He is also survived by eleven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

After the war, he worked in the Moving and Storage Industry, first as a truck driver for Akron / Chicago then as a Manager / Dispatcher for the Heavy Hauling and Crane portion of Costich and Sons.

Allen was an avid golfer and began golfing in his teens.  During that time, he worked at Elmira Country Club as a caddy and had the opportunity to caddy for the golf legend Byron Nelson.  He loved to pass on his golf skills by teaching some of his children, their spouses and grandchildren.

He dedicated his life to servicing his community.  In Webster, New York Allen was active in Kiwanis and for a period of time was the President of that organization.  In addition, he was part of the Sea Scouts teaching young people the responsibilities of sailing and respect for the water and boating.

In 1981, Allen and his wife purchased a cottage in Thousand Island Park, New York.  During their time there he was a member of the Historical Preservation Board and joined the Coast Guard Auxiliary.  He went through training with the Coast Guard to be able to teach a certified Water Safety Boating Course to the young people of the park, which he did for many years.

Allen and his wife were also an integral part in restarting the Thousand Island Yacht Club, which is still thriving today.

After retirement, Allen and his wife Jinny, opened a shop in the Wellesley Island Hotel called Lyle's Lighthouse.  The shop was known for the sale of T-shirts and sweatshirts with pictures of the Guzzle, Pavilion and Cottages, flags, lamp and clock repair.

We were able to celebrate Allen's 90 th birthday at the cottage last July.  It was apparent that he was loved by many who came to see him at a distance even during the pandemic.

Services will be held graveside on July 17, 2021 at Riverside Cemetery, Wellesley Island, New York, time to be determined.

Celebration of his life will follow the services at the family cottage, 404 St. Lawrence Avenue, Thousand Island Park, New York 13692.
