IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Bobbie S
Clement
August 13, 1927 – March 10, 2023
Bobbie Shappley Clement passed away on March 10, 2023 at the age of 95 while living in Mount Dora, Florida, her hometown since 1953. Bobbie was born and raised in Falkner, Mississippi to parents Mr. L. Edward "Edd" and Iola P. Shappley, who were both educators. She had one sister and one brother. Falkner was a close-knit rural farming community. Bobbie used to joke that although she could not ride a bicycle because of ruts in the road, she could easily ride a horse bareback.
Bobbie attended Mississippi State College for Women, where she was a starting guard on the basketball team. Upon graduation, her first job was as a home demonstration agent in Pontotoc, Mississippi. She used to laugh that while there she was "courted by a college boy" who lived across the street from the courthouse building where she worked. George Clement turned into the love of her life. Once married on April 1, 1950, they moved to Arkansas where George completed his college studies and Bobbie worked as a teacher. While there, she was blessed with the birth of their first son, Charles Bernard Clement.
Upon graduation, they moved to teach in Arcadia, Florida for one year. They journeyed to Mount Dora, Florida during 1953 when Prof. Roseborough hired her and George as teachers who were required, at that time, to be on separate campuses. Bobbie began her teaching career at the high school as a home economics teacher, and George agreed to teach 6th grade at the elementary school, provided he could coach at the high school. During 1958, Bobbie was blessed with the birth of their second son, George Edward "Ed" Clement. Bobbie loved Mount Dora and her students at Mount Dora High School where she continued to teach Home Economics. During her 37-year Mount Dora career, she raised her family with George along with her FHA girls and Modern Family Living boys. Bobbie took an interest in all students at Mount Dora High School whether she taught them in her classes or not. She rarely missed attending a football, basketball, and baseball game from 1953 through 1976.
In 1990, Bobbie and George retired together after a total of 40 years teaching and coaching. They spent the years afterwards traveling and spending lots of time with friends, family, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who enjoyed their humor, kindness, and Bobbie's cooking. She was known as a world class conversationalist to those who loved her, and friends and family alike will miss their long talks together.
Bobbie was predeceased by her son Charles (Sue), and her two siblings: Patty Sue Scott (Clyde) and Ray Shappley (Neva). She was survived for six days by her husband, George. She continues to be survived by her son Ed (Rae), four grandchildren: Dr. Holly Westmoreland (Stanley), Brian Clement (Rachael), Bradley Clement, and Brett Clement, and six great grandchildren together with numerous nieces and nephews.
