Obituary

Donald Miller, 94, passed from this earth, on March 11, 2016, to join his beloved wife Irene in Heaven. Born on River Road in Moore Station, Iowa on January 26, 1922 to Harry and Ella Miller, he graduated from New Sharon High School in 1940. Upon graduation and with the start of WWII, he entered the Navy, working as a Navy Corpsman in the South Pacific, caring for injured Marines. In 1944, while stationed at Quantico, Virginia, he married his high school sweetheart, Helen Irene Wallace. When the war ended he was transferred to Washington, D.C. to a recruiting office and then was discharged in 1946. Don and Irene then returned to New Sharon, Iowa where they farmed 80 acres and raised three children: Dale, Janet and Gary. In 1955 Don and Irene moved their family to Melbourne, Florida, where their youngest son, David, was born. The family then settled in Mount Dora, Florida in 1958. Later Don and Irene completed their family with the birth of their youngest daughter Joyce.

After arriving in Florida Don worked as the Manager for Leesburg Tire & Battery and then as the Chief of Operations at Orange State Ready Mix Company overseeing the operation of both the Mount Dora and Apopka plants. In 1976 Don obtained his Real Estate license and General Contractor license and worked with Platt Construction building and selling homes throughout the Lake county area. Don later joined Everett Huskey and was the Manager at the Mount Dora Office of Huskey Realty. Don served on the Board of the Lake County Association of Realtors as Director in 1984-88, 1990, 1994 and 1995; as the President of the Board in 1989; and Treasurer in 1996. He was Vice President of District 7 Florida Association of Realtors in 1991. In 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2006 Don served as the Vice President of the Greater Lake County Association of Realtors. He also served as a Director on the Board in 2005, 2007-2010. During his long and active career, Don also served as either a member or chairperson of numerous committees on behalf of the Associations. Don received the Lifetime Achievement award from the Realtors Association of Lake and Sumter Counties in 2010 commemorating over 40 years of distinguished service.

Always civic minded, Don served his community in various capacities including service as Director Mount Dora Chamber of Commerce 1984; as a member of the Natural Resources Advisory Committee 1991-1998; Lake County Planning and Zoning Commission 2003-2004; Lake County Zoning Board 2004-2007; and as a volunteer mediator for the Lake County Court Mediation Program 2005-2007. Don was a lifetime member of the American Legion, the Florida Elks and Farm Bureau. He was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church and the Carpenter's Class. Don never met a stranger and created a lasting impression on all who knew him, and leaves his family a memory of love they will take with them for all their days.

Don leaves behind a sister, Nancy Stevens of Maui, Hawaii; all five of his children: Dale Miller of Davie, FL; Janet Miller of Leesburg, FL; Gary Miller of Lexington, KY; David Miller of Brunswick, GA; and Joyce Miller of Mount Dora, FL; grandsons: Dominique Miller, Alexis Miller, Patrick Miller, and Michael Hartman; granddaughter Rachael Curvin; first cousin, Floyd Parker; twice removed niece, Bonnie Holloway and nephews Scott Holloway and Phillip Holloway.
