Obituary

Our beloved mother, sister, nana and friend passed away unexpectedly in her home January 18, 2022 at the age of 85. She had been in and out of the hospital for the past two months and was regaining her strength and independence. She was in her own home on the lake, next door to her daughter's family with her dog Chip, right where she wanted to be.

Doris was born in the little town of Vernon in the panhandle of north Florida to Charles William Jr. "Bill" and Agnes Jenkins Holmes. Doris was the eldest of four siblings, Elaine, Judy, & Billie Faye. They were a poor but loving family and enjoyed a happy childhood. Education was extremely important to her and she took school very seriously. After graduation she worked her way up at the State Bank of Apopka. She was an intelligent, beautiful young woman, fashionably dressed in clothes she made herself, quite the seamstress. She took up oil painting and loved to cook and fish.

Bobby Don Hurley moved to central Florida after graduating from UF with a masters in agricultural soil science. He was a fertilizer salesman and founded the first liquid fertilizer plant in the area. They were married in 1968 and lived on Overlook Drive in Mt Dora. They were both previously married. Doris had two children, Ronnie and Vonnie and Bobby had Don. Their daughter Dodi came along later.

After a fun time of business trips and parties, Bobby sold the business to pursue his dream of farming. They purchased acreage off Wolfbranch Road and Lake Jem. Farming turned into a foliage nursery business. It was hot, back breaking work. There were successes and failures, good times and bad all the while enjoying the land, hunting, fishing and being with nature.

Years later they leased out the land for farming. Doris studied and became a licensed real-estate agent until she was given the opportunity to work with her son-in-law Keith at Lake Jem Farms. She worked in the office for many years. Once Dodi and Keith's first son was born, her title proudly changed to nana and has joyously been so ever since. She was finally at a point in her life where she could truly enjoy a close relationship with her grandchildren.

Doris was the most wonderful person I've ever known. Though she confessed on several occasions she wasn't always that way. She'd say, " I used to be selfish and mean." If that's true, I thought, then there's still hope for me. She was so loving, joyful, funny, optimistic, tireless, talented, compassionate, selfless, generous, thoughtful and kind. She loved serving others and was happiest when she brought friends and family together with food and good cheer.

She is survived by her sisters Elaine and Billie Faye, her children Vonnie, Don and Dodi, eleven grandchildren and a great grandchild.

You are the light of our lives, a light that will continue to shine through us. We love you and miss you so much mom.
