March 27, 1933 – April 21, 2018
Gwendal R. (Roberts) Miner, 85 of Mount Dora, FL died Saturday, April 21, 2018 at her home surrounded by family and friends. She was born in Era, Texas to the late Bervin Elmer Roberts and Lila Ruth Roberts on March 27, 1933.
Gwen was justifiably proud of her nursing career which began with her graduation from the Northwest Texas Hospital School of Nursing. She later earned an AA degree from Amarillo College, a BS in Nursing Education from University of Texas, Galveston and an MA degree in Education from Columbia University. She held faculty appointments at the University of Texas, Galveston, The University of Hawaii and the University of San Francisco.
In the spring of 1969 Gwen married Dr. Walter F. Miner and became a partner in his 31 years of Naval Service spanning eight assignments on four continents including Naples, Italy; Cairo, Egypt; Bethesda, Maryland; Portsmouth, VA; Yokosuka, Japan. Charleston, South Carolina.
In 1988 Gwen and Walt searched the globe to decide where they would spend their retirement…..and selected Tavares, Florida! In the next 30 years in Tavares, and later Mount Dora, Gwen was involved in many activities including the Retired Officers Wives Association the Lawn Bowling Club and the Yacht Club of Mount Dora.
Gwen was the epitome of the perfect southern lady and was known – literally – around the world for her cooking and entertaining skills. Her door was always open and there was always a seat at her table.
In addition to her husband, Gwen is survived by her sister Glenda Buchanan and her husband Tom, of Colorado. Jeannie Greer and her husband Lee, of California. Gail Houser of Kansas. She was preceded in death by her brother Doug Roberts.
Gwen's life is celebrated by step-daughter Kathy McAllister and her husband Bobby of Stafford, VA. Three grandchildren: Jennifer McConnaughhay and husband Allen of Tallahassee, FL and their children Emily and Megan. Patrick Snyder of N. Carolina and Timothy Snyder and his partner Alicia Sibilia and their son Lysander Sibilia of Miami, FL.
Also an important part of her life was step-daughter Lynn Miner and her partner Roger Carroll of Stafford, VA. Three grandchildren: Kimberly Kentta and her husband, Michael, and great-grandchildren Rylee, Brayden and Caleb of King George, VA. Sarah Flynn-Parke and her husband, Sean of Meriden, CT. Benjamin Ryan Flynn and his wife Lindsey and their children Avery and Sloan of Great Lakes, IL.
She is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, special friends and relatives
A Memorial Service will be held Friday, May 4, 2018 at Allen J. Harden Funeral Home, 1800 North Donnelly St., Mount Dora. Visitation will be at 10:00am and service at 11:00am.
