Jerry Leon
Kirk
January 21, 1939 – May 27, 2026
Jerry Leon Kirk, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 27, 2026, at the age of 87, following a long and courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease. His life was one defined by resilience, love, and an unwavering commitment to his family.
Born on January 21, 1939, in Newbern, Tennessee, Jerry’s journey took him far beyond his hometown. He joined the military in 1961 where his first duty station was in Stuttgart, Germany. He would eventually serve later in the Vietnam War. After serving his country honorably for 27 years in the United States Army, he built a life rooted in both service and exploration, eventually calling Germany and Mount Dora, Florida home. Through his military career, which he joined in 1961, Jerry demonstrated discipline, perseverance, and a relentless drive for self-improvement, earning a college degree in Computer Science while rising through the enlisted ranks.
Jerry’s life was not without its challenges. As a talented baseball player in his youth, he earned a place in tryouts for a Major League Baseball team and proved himself worthy. However, the barriers of segregation denied him the opportunity to play. Though this was a profound injustice, it did not define him, rather it strengthened his character. Soon after, he was drafted into the Army, where he would go on to build a distinguished career and a life of purpose. Jerry believed deeply that a person’s character is measured not by the hardships they face, but by how they respond to them and he lived that belief every day.
Jerry was preceded in death by his grandparents, Arthur and Della Ferguson, who raised him, as well as by his brother, William, his sister, Bertha, and his daughter, Alice Yvonne.
At the heart of Jerry’s life was his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 44 years, Regina Kirk, whose roots trace back to Jachenau, Germany. Together, they built a life filled with love, partnership, and shared adventures, including their cherished second home on Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia, Canada. He leaves behind his three children—Malee, Edward, and Denis Kirk—and his five grandchildren—Jordan, Ryann, Naya, James, and Micah—each of whom carries forward his legacy of strength and love. He is also survived by his sister, Ernestine Jennings of Newbern, Tennessee, as well as extended family in both the United States and Germany.
Jerry was the pillar of his family: a steadfast provider, protector, and a constant source of guidance and support. He found joy in life’s simple pleasures, such as fishing, hunting, and appreciating the quiet beauty of country living. One of his happiest periods was living in a small village in Germany called Beuerbach, where he cherished caring for his chickens, ducks, and a rooster, as well as tending a tiny garden he cultivated with love. Jerry relished the fresh country air and the serene pond behind the home he shared with Regina. He had a deep passion for sports, spending hours watching games on television and remaining an avid follower of tennis throughout his life. Artistically, Jerry wrote poetry and transformed yards into beautiful landscapes. His wonderful sense of humor shone through in his enjoyment of comedy films and the laughter he shared with those around him.
Above all, Jerry will be remembered for his kindness, his strength, and his enduring love for his family. He touched the lives of many and leaves behind a legacy of integrity, perseverance, and compassion. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
