Joan Oberly Haviland, August 29, 1924 to February 1, 2013, died in Orange City, Florida at the age of 88. She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Richard "Dick" Haviland; children Sherman D. Hanna (Suzanne Lindamood) of Columbus, Ohio, Barbara F. Hanna (Edward Ball) of Banning California, and Kathleen P. Hanna (Brian Lee) of Queensbury New York; step children Patricia Haviland of Cortland, New York, Darlene Haviland of Morristown, New Jersey, Chuck Haviland (Sherry) of Spanaway, Washington, Terri Price of Homer, New York, Mark Haviland of Ithaca, New York, and Carma Saldana of Harlingen, Texas; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by a daughter, Valerie J. Hanna (Glenn Hughes), a brother Robert Oberly (Linda), and parents H. Sherman Oberly and Charlotte Peters Oberly.

Joan was born and raised in Philadelphia where her father was a Professor of Psychology and Dean of Admissions at the University of Pennsylvania. Among other childhood adventures, when she was 10 she accompanied her father on a trip to London, Paris, and Liberia where her Uncle Bob Oberly was a Lutheran missionary. She graduated from Friends Central School in 1942 and attended the University of Pennsylvania where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority.

She married Parker "Pat" Davie Hanna, Jr. in 1943. She and Pat had four children: Valerie in 1944, Sherman in 1946, Barbara in 1948, and Kathleen in 1950. In 1969 she married Richard Haviland and her family increased substantially with the addition of his six children.

Joan and Dick lived for many years in the Ithaca, New York area where Joan was supervisor of computer activities at Cornell University's Warren Hall Computer Center and Dick ran a boat repair and upholstery business near their home on the shores of Cayuga Lake in Lansing. They enjoyed sailing the boat that Dick had built on Cayuga Lake and were active in the Coast Guard Auxiliary where Joan served as a Flotilla Commander. Joan and Dick were members of the Ithaca Unitarian Church, the Grange, the Square Naters Square Dance Club, and several bridge clubs. After Joan's retirement, they divided their time between Lansing, New York and Sanford, Florida for several years before moving to Florida full time. In Florida they were members of the First Unitarian Universalist Church of West Volusia, Florida and were active in bridge clubs.

Joan died a week after surgery for recently diagnosed breast cancer. Until the surgery she remained active, attending church, regularly playing bridge, keeping up with the news, and staying in touch with her friends, children, and grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held this spring.
