John Millard of Umatilla, FL, died May 29 after a long illness. He was 78.
Mr. Millard was born on October 6, 1936, in Rhinelander, WI, to Alice (nee Klimowicz) and Albert Millard, who preceded him in death as did his younger brother, Patrick. He is survived by his wife Nancy Bawden Millard of Noxon, MT, and former wife, Royalene Cison Millard of Eustis, FL, and their daughters Deanna Howell of Mt. Dora, FL, and Linda Millard of Eustis; son Dean Millard of Tampa; 4 grandchildren, Karamie, Sheralyn, Tyler, and Dylan; and 1 great-grandson, Ethan.
He was a 1954 graduate of Bishop Noll High School in Hammond, IN. After enlisting in the United States Navy, he was stationed in Pensacola, where he moved in 1959 and later graduated from the University of West Florida; there, he later served as an Escambia County deputy sheriff, substitute teacher, youth counselor, and volunteer fire fighter and first aid instructor with the Red Cross, and in the Navy Reserve.
He relocated with his family to Mt. Dora in 1975, where he worked as an instructor of law enforcement and a halfway house counselor, and as a reserve officer for the Mt. Dora police department, while continuing in the Navy Reserve. He resumed active duty in the Navy in 1980, in Fremont, CA, where he later worked as a state investigator, before retiring to Noxon, MT, in 1992. While in Noxon, he was active with the Montana search and rescue service and also worked as a substitute teacher. After returning to Florida in 2003, he volunteered with Meals on Wheels.
Funeral Services will be held at Trinity Evangelical Church in Eustis on Friday, June 5, at 11 AM, with burial in Elmwood Cemetery in Hammond, Saturday, June 6, at Noon. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to the American Red Cross in Mr. Millard's memory.
