Obituary

Julie Hodges was born Julia Mary Burns, July 2nd, 1919 in Detroit Michigan, the only child of Anna and Leo Samuel "Tommy" Burns. She grew up and attended school in the Detroit suburb of Royal Oak Michigan. She was valedictorian for the Marygrove College class of 1940.

Julie met her first husband, Frederick L. Hilton, while in high school in 1934. After both completed college, Julie and Fred married in 1942, and moved to Washington, DC where Fred worked during the war developing radar for the US Navy at the Naval Research Laboratory. Julie taught in the local DC primary school in Anacostia. After the war, Fred was offered a position as an engineer for the start-up company, Motorola, located in Chicago, Illinois. Between 1946 and 1971, Julie and Fred raised two children while living in Bensenville, a Chicago Suburb; the late Susan Ann Hilton and Dr. Thomas F. Hilton. Julie taught 1st grade in the Bensenville school district between 1954 and 1971, when Fred relocated his office to the newest Motorola plant in Plantation Florida. Consistent with her education career, Julie worked as Children's Librarian at the Plantation Library until 1983, when Julie and Fred both retired.

In 1984, Julie and Fred moved to Errol Estates in Apopka Florida to enjoy a leisurely retirement of golf and community activities until Fred passed away from cancer in 1993. Julie remarried to long-time friend, Malcolm "Mac" Spencer, and they remained in Errol until Mac passed away in 1998. In 1999, Julie elected to move to Waterman Village where she shared an apartment with her old dog "Puppy." In 2001, Julie met James W. "Jimmy" Hodges at the introduction of Warren Hanson. In 2002, Julie and Jimmy married, and moved to 500 Waterford until 2012, when they entered assisted living at Bridgewater. Jimmy passed away a day short of his 98th birthday in March of 2015.

Julie took pride in her two children. Susan was a National Merit Scholar. She died in 1988 after a long battle with mental illness. Consistent with his father's service to the Navy during WWII, son Tom entered the Navy during Vietnam in 1970, and retired at the rank of Captain. Tom retired from the National Institutes of Health 2012. Tom and his partner, Ivo, currently live in Indian Harbour Beach Florida. Julie also took great pride in her daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Spencer Young and Beth's two daughters, Christine Young and Melissa Galli Wilson. Beth and both granddaughters-in-law live in the Orlando area, and visited Julie frequently until her death. Julie is also survived by her grandson, Michael Weston and his wife Sara of Paw-Paw Michigan and their three children.

Without a doubt, Julie was liked by everyone who encountered her throughout her long life, and was dearly loved by all who knew her. She enjoyed a full and productive personal and professional life, and will be missed by all.
