Obituary

Commander Kevin Denis Harty USN (ret.) 96 passed away January 5 at Cornerstone Hospice , Taveres, FL. He was born November 14, 1920 in Jersey City, NJ. to Dennis F. Harty and Eileen Walsh Harty both from county Tipperary , Ireland. His brothers Donal and Gerald are both deceased. His education and faith foundation was formed at St. Peter's Prep School (Jesuit), University of Maryland and Villanova University (M.A. History). His distinguished Naval career began in WWII aboard the submarine USS Grenadier which was sunk by the Japanese and led to his three years as a prisoner of war in Japan. After the war he married Ethel Christensen (deceased 1969) and they spent two years in Warsaw, Poland as naval attache. They had two children Deirdre (deceased 2016) and Kevin Jr. He was captain of the USS Regulus during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He retired from the Navy with the Purple Heart, Silver Star and Bronze Star. He was Associate Director of Admissions at Villanova University and retired in 1973 when he married Virginia Volkmer Dwyer. They moved to Indian Rocks Beach, Florida to enjoy retirement, playing tennis, reading and crossword puzzles , before making Villa Dora in Mount Dora, Florida home. He is survived by wife Virginia, son Kevin Jr, step-son Kevin (Linda) Dwyer, niece Monica ( Dean Gellup), nephew Neal Christensen, nieces Sally Burtner and Stefanie ( David Fennell), granddaughter Christina Brito ,great granddaughter Alyssa, great great grandson Kameron and son in law Martin Haugh. Funeral Services will be held at St Patrick's Catholic Church, Mount Dora, Florida on Tuesday, January 31 at 9 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Cornerstone Hospice, 2445 Lane Park Road,Taveres, Florida 32778
