Loraine W. Reed, daughter of the late Philip G. Whitcomb and Edith Sager Whitcomb, passed away peacefully on September 9 in Altamonte Springs, Florida.
She was born on May 25, 1916 in Rutland, Vermont and was a proud member of the class of 1935 at Rutland High School.
She went on to receive her certification as a registered nurse at Margaret Pillsbury Hospital in Concord, New Hampshire. She was employed at Rutland Regional Medical Center for more than thirty-five years, primarily in pediatrics. Concurrently, she served for approximately fifteen years as school nurse at the elementary school in North Clarendon.
She was predeceased by her brother, Henry S. Sawyer, and her husbands, Seneca E. Smith and Thomas F. Reed. She is survived by her two sons, Robert W. Smith and wife Caroline of Altamonte Springs, and Nathaniel H. Reed and wife Noreen of Greensboro, North Carolina. She was blessed with six grandchildren: Susan, Gina, Christopher, and Gregory Smith, and Melissa and Craig Reed, six great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was a loving and devoted daughter, wife, mother, and grandmother. She will be remembered for her wonderful positive spirit, devotion to duty, friendliness, and beautiful smile. In her youth it was often said that she resembled Myrna Loy, a leading movie star of the 1940s. She was a world class baker of chocolate chip cookies. She will be deeply and sorely missed.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Loraine may be made to organizations that promote the health of children or animal welfare.
A grave site memorial service is planned for May 25, 2014. Loraine requested to be interred next to her father at Evergreen Cemetery in Center Rutland.
