Obituary

Mary Frances Block, MD, beloved wife, mother, physician of women's health

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Dr. Mary Frances Block, a distinguished obstetrician and gynecologist known for her expertise in high-risk surgery and pregnancies. She died June 25, 2024, from complications of small-cell lung cancer. She was 81.

Born October 26, 1942, in Vero Beach, FL., to Oscar and Rose (Seraphine) Thompson, Mary Frances grew up amongst beloved cousins and her adoptive father, Harry Cole, whom she greatly adored. She graduated valedictorian of Vero Beach High School in 1960, and her journey in science and medicine began at The University of Southern Mississippi, where she earned dual undergraduate degrees in English and chemistry summa cum laude. She continued her pursuit of excellence at the University of North Dakota earning master's degrees in virology and microbiology. She then received her Medical Doctorate from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, completed her general internship, and met her loving husband of 56 years, Dr. Lawrence Block.

As Larry was moved to Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City, Mary Frances completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology and fellowship in maternal fetal medicine at the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine. As a faculty member she attained associate professorship, taught students and residents, authored papers and sections of medical textbooks, and published significant research in obstetrical medicine that is still the gold standard for treatment during premature labor today.

Dr. Block established her private practice in Oklahoma City with partners Dr. Donald Rahhal and Dr. May-Li Barki. Her 32-year career was marked by her dedication to her patients and her unwavering commitment to advancing women's health. She was also called to serve in medical missions both locally and in remote villages of Belize.

Mary Frances was a pillar of strength and compassion in her community, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of countless families. When Dr. Block was not practicing medicine, she was an avid horseback rider, reader, gourmet chef, mahjong player, and involved member of her church. She adored entertaining friends for dinner, hosting book clubs and mahjong games, and being a humble servant to all in need.

Throughout her remarkable life, she forged enduring friendships that mirrored her journey - from the playful corridors of grade school, through the studious halls of high school and medical school, to the collaborative spaces of her professional life. Her warmth radiated beyond, touching neighbors and fellow church members, all of whom cherished her presence. Her legacy is a tapestry of bonds that spanned a lifetime, a testament to a life rich in love and companionship.

Dr. Block was preceded in death by her son, Douglas, and cousins, Lois and Alan, but her legacy lives on through her husband, Dr. Lawrence Block, step-brother, Jim Cole, daughter, Dr. Leslie Block, son, Nicholas Block, daughter-in-law, Amanda, and grandchildren Alyssa, Seeley and Callen.

A requiem mass will be held for Dr. Block at St. James Episcopal Church, Leesburg, FL., on July 27, 2024, at 11am with a celebration of her life to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Episcopal Church Women (ECW) of St. James Episcopal Church, Leesburg, FL.
