Steven Lawrence Devine died at his home in Eustis, Florida on September 7, surrounded by his loving family. His death resulted from complications of ALS, which had ravaged his body, but not his mind, over the past two years.
Steve was born to Gregory and Helen Devine on May 17, 1938 in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. Following his graduation from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1960 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, he was employed by Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company. There, he participated in the construction of the USS Enterprise, the world's first nuclear powered aircraft carrier. He also was involved in the building of the nuclear powered submarines, USS John C. Calhoun-SSBN 630 and USS Von Steuben SSBN-632. In 1966, Steve relocated to West Palm Beach, where he was employed by Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Corporation until his retirement.
Steve is survived by Judy, his wife of 49 years, and his daughters, Katherine de Jongh (Chris) of Sorrento and Susan Grubb (Jeff) of Lusby, MD. He leaves to cherish his memory grandsons Lawrence and William de Jongh, ages 11 and 9, and Ryan Grubb, age 3. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Don and Carol Devine of Hackettstown, NJ. Five nieces and one nephew and their children all referred to him as the most fun loving uncle one could ever hope to have.
Steve's family wishes to thank his loving and compassionate caregivers at Florida Hospital-Waterman Home Health Care in Tavares. We will always be indebted to Ty Evans, Catherine Combs and Vivienne Williams, all of whom cared for him so tenderly as his illness progressed.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the ALS Association in Steve's memory would be appreciated by the family.
