IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Suong Kim
Miles
February 5, 1950 – April 22, 2024
Suong K. Miles, beloved wife of David R. Miles, mother of Debra S. Watson (Charles) and James D. Miles (Monica) and grandmother of three, passed away on April 22, 2024. Born February 5, 1950, she met the love of her life, David, while both worked at Advisory Team 45 in Phan Rang, Republic of Vietnam. She arrived on a fiancée visa in Charleston, SC., USA, and they were married on December 24, 1971. They spent over 19 years together while David pursued a career as an Army Officer. She dutifully moved from Charleston, to New Jersey; Indianapolis; Taegu, Korea; Northern Virginia; and Anniston, Alabama. Always the faithful Army wife, she volunteered at wife clubs and thrift shops, ending up as President of the Anniston Army Depot Wives Club.
When the wall came down in Berlin, David knew the Army was going to get much smaller, so he opted to retire after 20 ½ years and started a second 26 year career as a local government finance officer. Suong was happy to participate in this career also. Both children were now teenagers and soon left for college. Suong decided to help pay for their tuition and started a twenty plus year career as a Bank Head Teller. Tired of the constant musical chairs of one bank buying out another, she spent five years running her own business of operating an 8 chair nail salon in Mount Dora, FL. She then did one final two year banking job in 2015-2016 with her 14th different bank through buyouts and transfers as David took jobs in South Florida, North Florida and finally Central Florida. Meanwhile, both Debra and Jim were starting their own families. Debra is the mother of Alec and Ashley and James is the father of Taylor.
Although Suong's final illness began with a January 17, 2024, stroke, she was able to watch the wedding of Ashley to Kirkland Festa on February 18th and attended the wedding of Alec to Elena Ernay on April 4, 2024. Eighteen days later she ended her voyage in America, her proudly adopted country.
Suong loved to entertain and cook for people. She could whip up hundreds of egg rolls in an afternoon to share with co-workers or for events for charity. She taught free cooking classes throughout her life and everyone enjoyed learning from her.
Suong belonged to the following organizations: Vice-President and soon to be President of the Howey-In-The-Hills Garden & Civic Club, Federated Republican Women Club, and President of the Howey-In-The-Hills Bridge Club.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to the Howey-In-The- Hills Garden and Civic Club. Checks may be sent to PO Box 24, Howey-in-the-Hills, FL., 34737.
Funeral Services will be held at Allen J. Harden Funeral Home located at 1800 North Donnelly Street in Mt. Dora, FL., 32757. The viewing will be on Friday, April 26th from 4-6 pm. The funeral service will start immediately after the viewing at 6 pm. A private family burial will take place at Florida National Cemetery Bushnell on Monday, April 29th, 2024, at 1pm.
