IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Wilfred Lawrence
Gieger
December 16, 1930 – August 29, 2018
Wilfred Lawrence Gieger, Age 87, our beloved husband, dad and grandpa, was called to his heavenly home by his Lord and Savior surrounded by his loving family on August 29, 2018 in Mount Dora, FL. Will was born in Skene, Mississippi on December 16, 1930, the son of William Lloyd and Vonciel Baron Gieger.
Will was a Civil Engineer graduate of Auburn University. After college he worked for Phillips 66, eventually bringing him to Florida in 1958. He moved to Orlando in 1960 and in 1964 made Winter Park his home. This is where he opened Gieger Jones Construction Company and later Gieger Corporation. He was passionate about Central Florida, and his resume is extensive. His most notable projects include developing New Smyrna Beach, (bringing water treatment and the sewer system to the area in order to build condominium complexes), others were Sea Coast Gardens I, II, and III, Sugar Mill, Tomoka Oaks, Captain's Quarters, the Vertical Assembly Building, the Rollins Fieldhouse, the Orlando Chamber of Commerce, Glenn Turner's Castle, over 1,200 gas stations and so many other industrial, commercial, government buildings. He was very active in the Central Florida community, as VP of Boy Scouts for the Southeastern US, Founding President of Florida Citrus Sports formerly known as Tangerine Sports, and serving on dozens of boards. He enjoyed playing baseball and football in his youth and bringing sports to Central Florida was a focus for Will and he was part owner of two different professional football teams through the years. He also enjoyed golfing, bowling, boating, painting and loved to fly his Cessna. His grandchildren remember him best as a great story teller, and the family loved to listen to him expound about the efforts and collaboration of so many in the growth and development of Central Florida.
After retirement, Will moved to Mount Dora, Florida with his wife Susan O'Connor Gieger, where he was a member of the Historic Preservation Board and very involved in the restoration and evolution of downtown Mount Dora. He is survived by his wife Susan of 38 years, his three children William Gieger (Becky Taylor), Elizabeth Talmadge (Gary), and Laura McCarthy (Chris), seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. The family is deeply saddened, but God forever blesses our lives through His gift of our precious husband, dad and grandpa.
